Inspectorsin this unit group evaluate and monitor health and safety hazards and developstrategies to control risks in the workplace. They inspect restaurants, publicfacilities, industrial establishments, municipal water systems and otherworkplaces to ensure compliance with government regulations regardingsanitation, pollution control, the handling and storage of hazardous substancesand workplace safety. They are employed throughout the private and publicsectors.

Mainduties

Inspectors in this unit group perform some or all of the following duties:

Inspectthe sanitary conditions of restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals and otherpublic facilities or institutions

Conductsurveys and monitoring programs of the natural environment to identify sourcesof pollution

Collectsamples of water for analysis; measure physical, biological and chemicalworkplace hazards; and conduct safety and environmental audits

Investigatehealth and safety related complaints, spills of hazardous chemicals, outbreaksof diseases or poisonings and workplace accidents

Inspectworkplaces to ensure that equipment, materials and production processes do notpresent a safety or health hazard to employees or to the general public

Develop,implement and evaluate health and safety programs and strategies

Initiateenforcement procedures to fine or to close an establishment contraveningmunicipal, provincial or federal regulations

Provideconsultation and deliver training programs to employers, employees and thegeneral public on issues of public health, environmental protection orworkplace safety.
