In order to legalise your degree certificate it would first need to be signed, certified and dated by a UK practising solicitor or notary public in the UK.
Please note that whenever a notary public or solicitor certifies a document, the following requirements must be met:
• They sign the document in their own name (Not a company signature, or a PP signature)
• They must have a current practising certificate with the relevant UK regulatory body
• They certify the document while in the UK.
• They clearly print or stamp their name and the details of their firm
• They state a certification (e.g. “I hereby certify that ...”)
o (if applicable) they need to include an original embossed/wet ink seal
• They date their certification
With regards to the Police certificate, this must be the original copy only, we cannot legalise photocopies. Furthermore, this can be signed by an official of the issuing authority or certified by a UK practising solicitor or notary public as long as they meet the aforementioned requirements.
1. I need to have a document legalised or Apostilled. How do I apply?
To have your document(s) legalised/Apostilled, you will need to go onto our website https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised and complete the online application . Upon completing the process you will be provided with a coversheet and the address to send your application to. There is no public counter.
We recommend sending in by tracked delivery and using a hard backed envelope if possible to avoid damage during transit. Please note that pre-authorisations for payment made during the application process will only be valid for 28 days and will expire from the payment system after this time.
2. I have submitted an application and I need to know where it is
In order to trace your application, you must provide the following information:
· The application/case reference starting “A-C-“
· The method of delivery used to send your application to us
· (if applicable) the tracking number for the delivery to us
· Information about the envelope such as the size, colour and any identifiable marks etc.
If you sent your application via standard mail, we will not be able to locate your application due to the high volumes of applications we receive on a daily basis. We process applications based on when they are received into our office.
3. What is Legalisation? / Do I need to get my documents legalised? / Which documents do I need to be legalised?
Legalisation is the process whereby we issue and attach an Apostille to a UK document in accordance with the Hague Convention of 5th October 1961. The Apostille confirms that the signature, stamp or seal on the document is true and genuine.
Every country has their own requirements which can change without our office being notified, therefore we cannot advise you as to which documents you may need to be legalised. You will need to contact the relevant overseas authorities directly to confirm what documentation they want presented to them and which may need to be legalised.
4. Which documents can be legalised? / How do I get new documents?
We are only able to legalise UK public documents to be used overseas and cannot produce new documents, copies or translations of documents, we are only able to legalise/apostille UK public documents.
5. Can you legalise my TEFL Certificate?
We can legalise some TEFL certificates; however there is no recognised accreditation body for TEFL in the UK (or internationally) and very few qualifications are recognised by a UK awarding body such as OfQual.
When we are asked to legalise a TEFL certificate we check to ensure that the organisation is based in the UK, have contact details in the UK (an email address alone is not sufficient) and we will check for wording such as master, degree or diploma as there must be evidence that it is an accredited qualification. If you are unsure of whether your TEFL certificate meets our requirements, please email us a scan of the document to look over for you.
