Educationalcounsellors advise current and prospective students on educational issues,career planning and personal development, and co-ordinate the provision ofcounselling services to students, parents, teachers, faculty and staff. Educationalcounsellors perform some or all of the following duties:
Counselstudents regarding educational issues such as course and program selection,time tables and scheduling, school adjustment, attendance problems and studyskills
Counselstudents regarding career or vocational issues including career exploration andplanning, résumé preparation, job interview skills and job search strategiesand make available to them a wide range of educational and occupationalinformation
Co-ordinateco-op and school-to-work transition programs, and the provision of counsellingand information services, such as career information, professional developmentsessions and exchanges with other educational institutions, to students,parents, teachers, faculty and staff
Consultwith teachers and parents or faculty and other professionals such aspsychologists, speech therapists and social workers regarding various issuesand concerns, and with administrators and community agencies regarding programsand referrals
Administerand interpret standardized intelligence, personality, vocational, aptitude andinterest tests
Developand co-ordinate study skills groups or workshops in high schools, colleges anduniversities on topics such as note-taking, test or examination anxiety andpreparation strategies and time management skills
Visitcolleges and secondary schools to provide academic information to prospectivestudents, their parents and educational counsellors
Co-ordinateor participate in student orientation programs in colleges or universities
Arrangefor employers to recruit graduating college and university students, andstudents for co-op education work terms
Counselstudents regarding personal and social issues such as substance abuse,depression, sexuality, eating disorders, anxiety, self-esteem, family problems,relationship and interpersonal skills and anger management
Counselstudents in crisis situations such as dealing with the death of a friend orfamily member, suicidal tendencies and abuse situations
Maysupervise peer counselling programs in school settings
Maysupervise field experience for graduate students in counselling
Mayteach regular classes.

Abachelor's degree in counselling, career development, education or socialsciences is required for counsellors in school settings.
Amaster's degree in counselling psychology or a related field such aseducational psychology, developmental psychology or social work is usuallyrequired.
Educationalcounsellors in post-secondary settings require an undergraduate degree and mayrequire a graduate degree. A particular academic specialization may also berequired.
InQuebec, membership in L'Ordre des conseillers et conseillères d'orientation etdes psychoéducateurs et psychoéducatrices du Québec is mandatory to use thetitle ''counsellor''.
Ateacher's certificate in the province of employment and some teachingexperience is usually required for counsellors in school settings.
Educationalcounsellors in colleges and universities may require licensing from aprovincial regulatory body governing psychologists, educational counsellors orsocial workers.
Additional information
Elementaryschool counsellors generally provide more social and personal counsellingwhereas academic counselling is provided more by high school counsellors.
Educationalcounsellors in colleges, universities and other settings may specialize inacademic, career or personal issues counselling.
